On Tuesday March 8th, Premier Jean Charest said Quebec would accept the recommendations from a shale gas fracking report which called for a moratorium on the practice except for exploration and study of its environmental impacts.

Joyce Nelson’s new story in the Watershed Sentinel, about the relationship between fracking and earthquakes, should lead to renewed concern in northeast BC where the practice is widely used. The dangers of fracking include leaking wellheads, water contamination, and aquifer destruction. The BC Tap Water Alliance has documented massive withdrawals of fresh water for intense fracking in the Horn River basin among other areas.

If we care about water in BC, it’s time to follow Quebec’s lead.
