Kinder Morgan Pipeline Safety

by Joyce Nelson

BC Energy Minister Rich Coleman appears to be ignoring the fact that corporate ownership of the Trans Mountain Pipeline changed hands in 2005, when the Canadian owner, Terasen Inc., was bought for $3 billion by Houston-based energy giant Kinder Morgan. Regarding the pipeline, Coleman told the Burnaby NewsLeader (April 12), "This one's been in operation for a long time, and it does show that pipelines can operate safely for generations."

Council of Canadians Tour: No Pipelines. No Tankers.

TOUR: No Pipelines. No Tankers.

To raise awareness and build community solidarity and support in the fights to stop pipeline expansions in BC, the Council of Canadians is organizing a six-city tour this month to say: “No Pipelines, No Tankers.” The tour will help educate about the devastating environmental impacts of these massive pipeline projects, which will move tar sands crude to BC’s coastline where it will be loaded into supertankers and shipped through precarious waters to new markets.

Facts on Offshore Oil from the Living Oceans Society and the Oil Free Coast Alliance

Myth #1: Coastal BC communities will gain thousands of long-term jobs if offshore oil development proceeds.

Fact: Research reveals that many of the jobs created from the oil industry are short term and employment is often granted to workers outside of the development area. On Canada's east coast, Hibernia did little to help the economies of rural communities. The construction of Terra Nova has employed more foreigners than Canadians and the Sable Island gas project produced many short-term jobs but few long-term jobs. Our commitments under international trade laws, such as NAFTA, prohibit us from guaranteeing local employment.

BC's Offshore Oil and Gas

After two years of pressure from the provincial government, the federal government has agreed to consider lifting its moratorium on offshore oil and gas in British Columbia. The federal moratorium has been in place since 1972. It prohibited tanker traffic from traveling on the inside
